Project : Understanding world population issues

Subject : Geography KS3

Y9 students from City School used the City Learning Centre over a six-week period for their Geography project on World Population.

They used the Internet, interactive whiteboards, Kar2ouche and laptops to access Word and Excel.

The students studied population pyramids, which can be difficult graphs to understand so using the interactive whiteboard meant Rachel could reveal parts of the graph on their own, use different colours and move labels around. This helped the students understand the graph better, making it easier to view than in a textbook.

The students also used the role-playing software Kar2ouche to study migration, looking at different peoples opinions on the subject and the issues facing immigrants.
Rachel said, “The pupils were very enthusiastic with improved motivation and they all understood the population pyramids very quickly. They worked on their own, at their own speed, allowing those behind to catch up and the more advanced students to work at a faster pace.”

As each student had a computer, Rachel could walk round answering individual Geography questions. Rachel covered more material with the students and felt they understood it better than when using standard teaching resources.

Rachel said, “The human geography unit makes use of many graphs and numerical data so these methods of teaching fit in well and make lessons more interactive. In the future I hope to use these methods in other Geography topics including rivers, coasts, volcanoes and earthquakes where ICT can be used to make physical processes easier to understand.”
