To introduce innovative teaching and learning methods into a Y5 art deco jewellery design and construction project.
The constraints
Access to tablet PCs in sufficient numbers and good quality colour printers. Teaching training also required on new software.
The solution
The City Learning Centre hosted two half day sessions for two Y5 classes providing tablet PCs and Natural Art software. These were planned half way through the six week session. The pupils had begun with drawings and clay modelling.
The City learning Centre workshop allowed pupils to experiment with different aspects of art and to undo and retry. The visit also made the session more of an event for the pupils.
The outcomes
The pupils were visibly more confident and more willing to experiment in subsequent art lessons. They were willing to take more risks with the jewellery project and later work was more imaginative. These effects were observed to spill over from art to literacy as well.
